Local Context & Civic Assets
- Demographics & Growth: The township population grew more than 5.5% from 2010 to 2020, creating greater demand on green space, stormwater systems, and local infrastructure (Parsippany Focus, 2025).
- Parsippany Green Team: Led by Co-chair and council candidate Matt Kavanagh, the team secured $22,000 in sustainability funding in 2025 and advocates for Parsippany’s Silver certification under Sustainable Jersey (TAPinto Parsippany, 2025).
- Parsippany Environmental Advisory Committee (PEAC): A nine-member volunteer board advising Township Council on environmental policy. PEAC has spearheaded a plastic bag ban, low-phosphate fertilizer ordinance, pollinator gardens, and a draft tree ordinance under previous mayor and council(Parsippany Focus, 2025).
Proposed Initiatives
1. Stormwater Audit & Trash Reduction Campaign
- Deploy Township-Wide Storm Drain Audit via Green Team Tools and install restrictive storm grates to prevent debris from entering waterways (InsiderNJ, 2025). Assist township in audit
- Expand Adopt-a-Street to cover 80% of town streets, mobilizing volunteers and collecting data on litter trends (Keep My Street Green, 2025).
2. Renewable Energy & Municipal Efficiency
- Complete the Green Team’s solar feasibility and energy upgrades at municipal buildings (Patch, 2025).
- Invest in hybrid and electric vehicles for the municipal fleet of vehicles.
- Retrofit municipal facilities for energy conservation, leveraging grants and partnerships.
- Collaborate with board of education to retrofit all schools through Energy Savings Improvement Plan (ESIP) through NJ BPU
3. Biodiversity & Habitat Enhancement
- Expand the Bat Protection Project and pollinator gardens.
- Adopt PEAC’s draft tree ordinance as a climate resiliency tool (Parsippany Focus, 2025).
- Expand “cut it and leave it” lawn care program
4. Sustainable Development Advisory Board Integration
- Collaborate with the township Environmental Advisory Committee to review land use and promote low-impact designs.
- Coordinate public outreach, green fairs, and multilingual educational events.
